Segway and TIER-Dott have partnered to offer 10,000 free rides to users travelling across the French capital at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The offer aims to demonstrate the ease of micromobility to both new and existing users and follows TIER-Dott’s decision to deploy 15,000 e-bikes across the capital in the run up to the Games – its largest fleet ever.

Segway is the vehicle solution provider for the entire fleet, and the partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging greener urban mobility.

“Segway has always been dedicated to making micromobility simpler and more accessible for everyone,” Alan Zhao, one of Segway’s Directors, told Zag Daily. “Continuing this mission, we are excited to actively participate in the Paris Olympic Games with TIER-Dott by offering 10,000 free rides to users worldwide.”

Paris’ investment in cycling infrastructure makes it a symbolic city for micromobility, with 60 kilometres of cycle lanes created for the Olympic Games alone. The city has turned up the green transport dial in recent months having voted in favour of tripling parking fees for SUVs, which will come into force in September.

“The City of Paris is a crucial city for shared micromobility due to its high population density, extensive cycling infrastructure and commitment to sustainability,” says Zhao.

“Paris’ significant investments in bike lanes, along with supportive government policies, facilitates the growth of e-bike services. We aim to welcome visitors and users from around the world to this special event, showcasing Paris as an iconic city that excels in sustainable transportation.”

New users registered on the Dott app will automatically receive a 20 minute free ride. Customers can also scan the hang tag QR code or enter the code ‘Segway’ to obtain the free ride.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Segway has decided to gift us 10,000 free rides,” TIER-Dott Chief Business Officer Nicolas Gorse told Zag.

“It’s the biggest promotion we have ever received from a vehicle solution provider partner. These free rides provide us with the opportunity to offer a better service to all Paris Olympics visitors.

“The City of Paris has expanded its cycling infrastructure for the Olympic Games, with not only more cycle lanes, but also parking for shared and private vehicles. With these free rides, we want to show the millions of visitors from around the world how micromobility – when fully integrated – can complement public transport on a large scale.”

The secret behind the fleet

How is it that TIER-Dott can manage a fleet of this size and cater for the uptick in usage?

Last week, Gorse told Zag that TIER-Dott’s operations rely on three pillars: a long-lasting and repairable vehicle, a vehicle solution that’s appealing to users when they need it, and cost-efficient operations allowing the service to be offered at an affordable price.

That’s why Segway’s vehicle solution is central to the operator’s strategy.

Featuring a swappable battery with an IPX7 waterproof rating, the vehicle boasts a range of more than 80 kilometres on a single charge, thereby reducing operational costs associated with battery swapping. The battery of this batch of vehicles is compatible with all of the shared e-scooter Max series. And with proper care, Segway’s e-bike is designed for a 20,000 km life cycle.

Puncture-free PU filled rubber tires increase resistance and durability, and electronic cable locks are integrated with the wheel to protect the e-bike against theft. The vehicle also comes with a strong steel cable, allowing riders to attach it to street furniture.

A 26-inch wheel integrated with drum brakes aims for smooth city riding while maintaining a low-cost design for the operator.

The vehicle’s multi-functional dashboard tops off its sleek design, integrated with vehicle status lights, zone indicators, a cell phone holder and wireless charging.

“Segway aims to deliver vehicle solutions that prioritise not only safety and riding experience but also operational efficiency,” Alan said.

“This focus helps optimise the total cost of ownership for operations, contributing to a more sustainable business model and greener environment. With the vehicle solution covered, TIER-Dott can focus its crucial attention ensuring the mobility of tourists and residents are fully catered for during the Paris Olympic Games.”
