e-Mobility Rentals provides an integrated ecosystem of electric vehicles and charging solutions for businesses across Europe.
“We provide the whole package,” CEO Eduard Anghel tells Zag Daily.
“Electric vehicles, universal batteries, swap stations, maintenance, insurance, all wrapped up into one subscription.”
With a fleet that spans all the new mobility modes – e-scooters, e-bikes, e-mopeds, e-cargo bikes, quadricycles and microcars – the goal is to address multiple urban mobility challenges simultaneously.
Zag Daily: How would you best describe your business?
Eduard: “Think of us as the Netflix of sustainable mobility. We’ve created a complete ecosystem that’s revolutionising how businesses handle their delivery fleets. We act for our clients like a dedicated team whose only job is to keep their business moving forward, sustainably. You know how frustrating it is when your phone charger doesn’t fit another device. We’ve solved that problem for electric vehicles, creating a universal battery system that powers over 20 different kinds of electric vehicles, from e-scooters to delivery vans.”
Zag Daily: Can you explain what segments of the transport sector e-Mobility Rentals serves?
Eduard: “Our business operates at the intersection of several crucial and rapidly evolving sectors. First in terms of sustainable mobility, as cities worldwide struggle with congestion and pollution. Second for last-mile delivery and urban logistics – a sector that is experiencing unprecedented growth, with global retail-ecommerce sales set to skyrocket to over $8 trillion by 2027. This increase places enormous pressure on last-mile delivery solutions, with a Serviceable Available Market of $11.2 billion in Europe alone. Next is Green Energy – our universal battery and solar power backed-up Swap Stations offer solutions that combine renewable energy with practical urban mobility needs. We also do fleet management – through our Fleet as a Service model we participate in the sharing economy, transforming how businesses approach vehicle fleet management by offering a subscription-based alternative to vehicle ownership. And finally what I would call Urban Infrastructure – our battery swapping stations represent a new and necessary layer of urban infrastructure, contributing to the development of smart cities and sustainable urban planning.”
Zag Daily: What would you say are your three main differentiators in the market?
Eduard: “We believe that our main differentiator is our complete ecosystem approach. We understood how important it is to take care of this end-to-end for our clients and not just offer one piece of the puzzle, but provide the whole picture: universal battery, swap stations, a wide range of electric vehicles. We wanted to become a one-stop-shop for businesses wanting to go green without the growing pains. Those are for us to take care of.
“Our universal battery is truly a huge advantage. After a lot of research, development and testing, we’ve managed to create a new generation of batteries that are now half the weight of their predecessor and work across 20+ different types of vehicles.
“Third, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond just electric vehicles. We’ve managed to build a circular economy around our services, from solar backed-up Swap Stations to giving batteries a second life. Even our non-functional components get a proper goodbye through responsible recycling.”
Zag Daily: What have been EMR’s major milestone moments in 2024?
Eduard: “2024 has been quite a ride! An amazing year for us. Our biggest achievement just came in – being conditionally approved as winners of the EIT Urban Mobility Main Innovation Call 2024, alongside our partners Glovo and Wolt. This win positions us among Europe’s top innovators in sustainable transportation. We’re honored and committed to living up to the challenge. EIT Urban Mobility has provided us with great access to resources, guidance and a network of knowledge and forward-thinking partners, access that we wouldn’t have achieved otherwise. Their mentorship is essential in how we fine-tune our solution to align with the latest urban sustainability goals. On the other hand, their funding allows us to accelerate R&D efforts. So it’s needless to say that we don’t see EIT Urban Mobility just a funding body, we see it as a community of innovators dedicated to solving Europe’s most pressing urban mobility challenges.
“Earlier this year we also launched our second-generation universal battery, which is 50% lighter than its predecessor. Our swap stations got a major upgrade too, doubling their capacity and adding solar power backup, in case of blackouts.
“Expanding our partnerships with industry giants like Glovo, Wolt and Kaufland was an extraordinary milestone too. When competitors become allies in the fight for sustainable cities, you know you’re onto something BIG. We’ve also expanded to several European countries: Norway, Finland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, so yes, it’s been quite a year and this is only the beginning.”
Zag Daily: Can you explain the scope of your new pilot with commerce platform Wolt and where you are working with them? Do you have plans to expand this partnership?
Eduard: “Our partnership with Wolt represents what we believe is the future of urban delivery. While I need to be discrete about specific details, I can share that we’re working together to revolutionize how their delivery fleet operates. Wolt’s riders can now swap batteries within seconds – quite literally – and get back on the road, maximizing their earning potential and efficiency. And yes, we’re definitely looking at expansion. Given the success we’re seeing and Wolt’s presence across Europe, we’re in discussions to scale this partnership across multiple new markets. When you have a solution that helps riders earn more while helping cities breathe better, expansion becomes less of a question of ‘if’ and more of ‘when’”.
Zag Daily: We understand you are working with Spanish food delivery app Glovo by providing a fleet of electric vehicles for their couriers. How is this partnership progressing?
Eduard: “Our collaboration with Glovo has been incredibly exciting! What started as a pilot has evolved into a strong partnership that demonstrates how technology and sustainability can work together to create real impact. Just recently at Tomorrow Mobility in Barcelona, we had the unique experience of seeing both Glovo and Wolt teams at our stand, united by the vision of zero-emission deliveries.
“Speaking of TMWC, our journey with the congress began in 2023, when we first showcased our concepts for sustainable urban logistics to industry leaders, investors and urban planners. This event allowed us to gain insights from potential partners and to connect with key stakeholders who believed in our mission. This year, the feedback and exposure we gained at TMWC helped us to refine our approach, so for E-Mobility-Rentals, TMWC is more than an annual event, it’s a critical part of our strategic roadmap.
“Glovo is an amazing business partner and what’s particularly fascinating about them is how quickly the couriers delivering through Glovo adapted to our system. When you can swap a battery faster than you can pick up an order, you know you’re making a difference in operational efficiency.”
Zag Daily: Have you been able to calculate how much time Glovo delivery riders have saved by using your universal battery system?
Eduard: “While I can’t share specific numbers due to confidentiality agreements, I can tell you this: what used to take 30+ minutes at a traditional charging station, now takes just seconds at our swap stations. But for sure Glovo has saved over 100 hours by using our ecosystem. And it’s not just about the swap time. It’s about eliminating range anxiety and the need to plan routes around charging stations. Riders can now focus on what matters most – delivering fast and great service, while we handle the power behind their performance.”
Zag Daily: Which markets are you targeting next and why?
Eduard: “We’re at an exciting expansion phase, with our sights set on several key European markets, while also growing our presence in existing ones. We also see enormous potential in North America and the Middle East, regions that represent different but equally compelling opportunities, experiencing a massive shift towards sustainable delivery solutions, especially in dense urban areas. Think about Saudi’s NEOM, it’s an amazing sustainability initiative that presents a perfect testing ground for innovative mobility solutions. And yes, we’re bold enough to think that we can help.
“When talking about expansion, we’re not only talking about geographical expansion, we’re evolving our business model too. Exploring franchise models alongside direct operations to ensure we can scale quickly while maintaining the quality and reliability our partners expect.
“We’re just getting started. The future is full of surprises, but also full of opportunities that we want to grab. On the other hand, the climate crisis isn’t waiting, so how could we?”
