Neuron to become Carbon Negative by 2025

Shared micromobility operator Neuron has committed to achieving Carbon Negative status across its global operations by 2025.

Carbon Negative is when an organisation removes more carbon than it emits.

The announcement coincides with the firm’s release of a new report laying out “ambitious measures” to reduce its emissions footprint by addressing emission-intensive processes in supply chains, manufacturing, operations and end-of-life treatment.

Titled ‘Meeting Micromobility’s Potential’, the report also highlights the positive social, economic and environmental impact Neuron has had on cities around the world so far.

On its path to 2025, Neuron commits to using recycled materials within its next generation e-scooter and holding its suppliers to “the same high standards we hold ourselves” through a Supplier Code of Conduct.

From an operational standpoint, Neuron pledges to power its devices with renewable energy across all markets. The company has also committed to deploying fleets with 100% swappable batteries and plans to use e-vans and e-cargo bikes for all operations.

With its devices, Neuron said they are built to last so it can repair and replace parts without replacing the whole scooter. Devices can stay on the road for up to five years before being 100% recycled to ensure the different parts remain in circularity. Neuron is currently piloting two second-life programmes for retired batteries with ambitions to scale these globally.

Last year, Neuron secured Carbon Neutral certification and signed up to The Climate Pledge to help reach net Zero by 2040.

In the UK, the company said 35% of all Neuron trips have replaced a car journey. This means 405,000 car trips have been avoided, saving a claimed 118 tonnes of C02, according to the operator.

Neuron CEO Zachary Wang commented: “We are committed to making a positive social, economic and environmental impact on cities, and setting an ambitious target to go beyond our current Carbon Neutral status, to become Carbon Negative by 2025, is the right thing to do.

“Further to this, we have a clear mandate to partner with cities, working with a diverse range of groups in the community including riders, those with accessibility needs, tourist offices and local businesses to bring them the best and most accessible service possible.”

Last week, Neuron explored community perspectives around e-scooter use as part of a new safety campaign in the UK.
