Mosa develops docked bike share solution for underserved communities

British IoT startup Mosa has developed a self-service docked bicycle-sharing solution for underserved communities with last-mile needs.

Known for its smart lock technology which converts standard racks into secure parking spaces, Mosa claims its solution reduces docking costs by 70% compared with traditional docked shared bike schemes.

Its product offering comes after a successful trial in Cambridgeshire which saw Mosa’s point-to-point cycling scheme bridge a public transport gap between a scientific campus – the Wellcome Genome Campus – and nearby train station.

“Remote cities and towns prefer docked solutions because they’re more organised and tidy compared with dockless schemes. However, the available docked systems are super expensive,” Mosa Founder Josh Liu told Zag Daily.

“Our bike share solution aims to dramatically reduce docking costs to serve these underserved communities that may not have the resources to invest in expensive docking systems.”

Josh said that 81% of Mosa’s targeted communities are located outside of central urban areas and are “most in need” of last-mile transport links. However, these communities can be overlooked by private operators due to lower profitability prospects.

“Many small towns and cities don’t have any bike sharing solutions available to them at all. They can’t afford docked schemes like London’s Santander bikes, and dockless companies like Lime or Voi mainly operate in populated areas.”

Mosa’s bike sharing solution can operate using any bike and be tailored to suit the needs of different stakeholders like business parks, hotels and campuses. Its smart docking technology is built under the highest security guideline (Sold Secure Diamond), is compatible with all micromobility vehicles, and can be retrofitted to most standard racks.

Following the successful trial in Cambridgeshire, which was supported by the Department for Transport, the Wellcome Genome Campus is now in discussions with Mosa to establish the bike sharing scheme on a permanent basis, and Mosa is aiming to expand across more campuses, business parks, hotels and small towns globally.
