Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the Santander e-bike scheme in London has surpassed one million hires demonstrating their “immense” popularity in the capital.
This summer, the transport body will be adding an additional 1,400 new e-bikes.
To boost their popularity even further, TfL is offering free and unlimited 30 minute rides for all Londoners on every Sunday in June to celebrate the launch of TfL Cycle Sundays.
TfL Cycle Sundays is a new programme of leisurely cycle routes that aims to support and encourage Londoners to explore the capital by cycle on Sundays.
Developed in partnership with leading cycling organisations including British Cycling, London Cycling Campaign and Sustrans, the initiative will offer beginner friendly journeys and support mechanisms.
Simon Munk, Head of Campaigns at London Cycling Campaign, told Zag Daily: “With 1.26 million cycle journeys being done daily in London, a third of all tube journeys, it’s clear London really does love cycling – and more and more Londoners are getting on bikes.
“Safe cycle routes are a vital part of that which LCC has long campaigned for and some of TfL’s Cycle Sundays rides use protected cycle tracks and quiet routes to help more people enjoy cycling. Our borough groups are local experts at producing amazing routes for everyone – so we’re looking forward to lots of people enjoying them and our led rides throughout the summer.”
TfL said the offer can be claimed by downloading the Santander Cycles app or heading to a docking station terminal, choosing a Day Pass, and using the code CYCLESUNDAYS.
“The boom we’ve seen in cycling in the capital over recent years has been fantastic, and we are determined to make cycling as accessible and affordable as possible, to encourage even more Londoners to give it a go,” said Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman. “This is why I am delighted that Santander Cycles will be offering unlimited free rides every Sunday in June, as part of Cycle Sundays. This is just one of the ways the Mayor and TfL are working to build a better, fairer and greener London for everyone.”
