Spanish aviation company Crisalion Mobility has partnered with Dovetail Electric Aviation to develop battery packs for its Integrity eVTOL aircraft.

Dovetail, known for its expertise in converting conventional aircrafts into electric ones, has been developing sophisticated battery packs which comply with rigorous standards such as DO-311 and DO-160G.

Crisalion is currently developing its Integrity eVTOL aircraft that accommodates five passengers and a pilot. It aims to make the aircraft commercially available by 2030 and will work with Dovetail to meet its performance and timeline requirements.

“We are developing modular battery systems applicable to both eCTOL and eVTOL, from a few hundreds of kilowatt-hours,” said Dovetail’s CEO, David Dora. “We are starting with conventional Li-Ion chemistries to bring a product to market fast, but we are also testing new chemistries for future versions.

“The first version of our system will enable operators of short flights to go electric in the short term. Our Dovepack concept has the potential to be upgraded with every battery pack replacement, extending range as future generations of cells are made available.”

Dovetail will provide prototype battery modules for initial functional and integration testing, and it will evaluate the battery technology developed by Crisalion. Following certification of the battery packs, Dovetail is expected to supply its battery systems to Crisalion.

The batteries will be certified under regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Crisalion and Dovetail will also work together to explore funding opportunities in Spain and the EU.
