Nine major companies have been awarded the highest rating from the FIA Road Safety Index.
The FIA Road Safety Index evaluates organisations on their road safety footprint, which refers to the number of fatalities and seriously injured people caused by road crashes within the company’s entire value chain.
Amazon, Uber, Waymo, IKEA, Honda, Scania, Shell, BAT Italia, and Folksam are the latest companies to have achieved the three star rating – the highest recognition from the Index.
The early adopters were announced at the FIA Foundation and FIA’s joint side event last night, ahead of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety which officially starts in Marrakesh today.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do at the FIA. We work alongside our Member Clubs to create a safer future for all, recognising the crucial role of the private sector in this effort,” FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility Willem Groenewald told Zag Daily.
“By adopting the FIA Road Safety Index and achieving its highest rating, companies send a powerful message — demonstrating their dedication to the highest safety standards, integrating road safety into corporate ESG strategies, and actively working to save lives.”
The expansion of the Road Safety Index with these nine companies – which join the programme’s first participating company TotalEnergies – aligns with the goals of the Stockholm Declaration, which launched the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 to 2030.
This UN initiative aims for a 50% reduction in traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, and the Declaration called for greater private sector involvement to achieve this target.
During the FIA’s side event which Zag attended in Marrakesh, representatives from the new companies took to the stage to give a one-minute speech on their commitment to road safety.
With Waymo, an American autonomous self-driving technology company, Director of Safety Research and Best Practices Trent Victor told the audience: “I’d like to ask you some questions.
“What if you designed your driver to be compliant? What would happen if your drivers were all driving speed limits? What would happen if you had the highest compliance of seatbelt and child seat use? What does that mean for traffic safety?
“I’d like to leave you with those thoughts…”
In 2026, the FIA is evolving its Road Safety Index into a five-star rating system to give a greater incentive for companies to strengthen their road safety efforts.
“Looking ahead, the FIA is committed to uniting its Member Clubs as a powerful engagement network, enabling them to connect with companies, drive participation, and accelerate the adoption of the FIA Road Safety Index,” Willem said.
“We are delighted to see major industry players supporting this initiative, especially during such a key moment for the global road safety community.”
