Voi encourages green travel during Commonwealth Games

Voi is encouraging green travel for the estimated 1.5m people attending the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by offering new and existing users discounts on rides.

The micromobility operator is giving new riders 15 minutes free riding by using the code ‘GAMETIME’. Existing ‘Voi-agers’ can get 50% off three Day Passes for the duration of the Games. These codes are valid from 28 July – 08 August.

In addition, the ‘Voi 4’ discounts offers students, NHS staff, emergency service workers, Armed Forces, veterans and those on a low-income, savings on rides.

To encourage maximum take-up in Birmingham, Voi recently expanded its operating area into the north of the city to cover the main sporting venues, including Alexander Stadium. This has resulted in a 33% increase in usage.

In the first week of Voi’s newly expanded operating area (7-13 July), nearly 4,000 riders have hopped on an e-scooter.

The encouraging trend in the rise of those adopting micromobility shows that people are willing to leave their cars at home if given convenient alternatives.

“Big events like the Games in Birmingham are a great opportunity to showcase how micromobility can deliver for the city, as our early analysis shows there is huge untapped demand from people to access convenient and affordable travel using e-scooters, following the recent expansion north of the city centre,” Voi’s Senior Public Policy Manager for UK and Ireland, Sam Pooke, told Zag Daily.

“We have worked closely with local stakeholders to ensure the right infrastructure, information and parking locations are in place so that thousands of people can hop on or off our vehicles daily at the Games without the drawbacks of pollution, congestion or traffic noise.”
