Dutch company VanMoof has unveiled redesigned versions of its e-bikes, with several new features to bring e-biking to a wider audience.
The A5 is aimed at people who are new to biking, using 24-inch wheels along with a step-through frame that makes it easy to jump on and off. VanMoof said the new frame on the A5 “keeps riders feeling closer to the road,” and comes with multiple cargo options designed to transport the “near equivalent” of a small city car.
The full-size VanMoof S5 is for longer rides, with a reworked straight frame that gives riders a higher position along with larger 27.5-inch wheels for a smoother experience.
Ties Carlier, VanMoof Co-Founder, said: “Only a handful of parts remain from our previous models, the S3 and X3. Every detail from the frame down to the chip sets and sensors has been engineered for the smoothest, most powerful ride ever.”
Both models use the new 25-watt Gen 5 electric motor which has been re-engineered to operate at near-silence. The long-range battery offers up to 150km on the S5 and 140km on the A5, and includes a rebooted torque sensor and e-shifter, which respond to a rider’s own pace and movement.
VanMoof said the e-bikes use an industry first ‘Halo Ring Interface’ integrated into the handlebars, which gives riders feedback on speed, battery levels, and connectedness. Riders can also mount their phone onto the handlebars and turn it into a dashboard, while charging it via the USB-C port.
Anti-theft technology has been revamped with a new in-wheel kick lock, bigger pin, and new auto retract function. The bike secures itself with a tap and can be unlocked automatically upon the riders return.
Pricing for the VanMoof S5 and A5 starts at £2,298 (€2498) and are on sale now with delivery expected from July. A range of accessories, including an optional click-on external battery, become available early Summer 2022.
