“Huge increases” in e-scooter use as Citymapper reveals 20 new scooter features

The number of e-scooter journeys has risen by 47% in Paris and 97% in Berlin compared to 2020, according to data collected by public transport app Citymapper.

These figures were announced by the company as it expands the popular app to include 20 new features, aimed at making it easier for users to ride e-scooters around big cities.

With over 180 e-scooter operators integrated into the app, Citymapper has made it easier for riders to see more information regarding their trips. This includes finding the nearest e-scooter and where to park safely in line with local regulations to stop fines at the end of a journey.

The app displays battery charge information for the nearest e-scooters available from various operators, and prioritises routes which use cycle paths, avoiding cobblestone streets and displaying no-ride areas and slow zones.

Riders are now given detailed turn-by-turn directions along with voice guidance for hands-free navigation for added safety.

It also links up with other public transport modes, such as buses to give the quickest and most convenient routes for users.

Trip times are determined by data from real-world usage, which Citymapper analyses and uses to predict the most accurate price estimates for rides.

Furthermore, the company has included e-scooters in its Citymapper Pass, a weekly subscription travel pass exclusive to London that can be used on TFL services along with e-bikes and black cabs.

For a more detailed look at Citymapper’s integrations with micromobility operators, we spoke exclusively to Citymapper’s Head of Design, Gilbert Wedam.
