Shared micromobility operator Tier has reached the one million rides mark in Dubai, UAE, after two years of operation in the largest city of the Gulf region.

Riders have covered 3 million km and replaced 515,000 km of car journeys in the city, avoiding 85,000 kg of CO2 emissions, according to Tier.

Amir Melad, Tier’s General Manager for the Middle East, told Zag Daily the company aims to expand further in the region.

“We plan to continue to work closely with all public and private stakeholders to increase our presence in the region and expand into new cities, areas, and zones in KSA, UAE, and Qatar to strengthen even further our position as the leading micromobility provider in the region”.

The Berlin-based scooter service in Dubai was launched on October 2020 and currently operates around 200 vehicles.

E-bikes were added last May in partnership with the real estate development arm of the conglomerate Al-Futtaim Group and Expo City Dubai. Both services are integrated with Dubai’s public transport apps.

Melad attributed the significant milestone to a “loyal customer base that values safe and reliable vehicles which are accessible through our cutting edge and customer friendly technology.”

“From the beginning, our main goal has been to serve the cities and their residents by providing the safest, most equitable, and sustainable mobility solution. Over the past year, we have expanded our offering in the region by providing a multi-modal service with our e-scooters and e-bikes”, said Melad.

Expansion in the Middle East

The company was previously focused on Europe but began looking for counter-seasonal revenue to offset low usage in the European winter.

Tier started launching in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Riyadh and now operates in seven cities across the Middle East, including Ruwais, Ras Al-Khaimah, and Jeddah.

“The figures clearly show that our e-scooters and e-bikes have long since become part of Dubai’s mobility mix,” said Melad.
