British routing and navigation start-up Beeline has unveiled its all-new Velo 2 GPS cycling computer just as it passes the one million rides travelled mark via its navigational devices.
Beeline helps cyclists have better journeys through intuitive navigation technology. The device finds the best route by gathering data from its riders.
With a big barrier to cycling being the perception of safety, Beeline gives users the opportunity to rate a road to indicate if they are having a positive or negative experience and to help avoid places that cause stress. These ratings then feed into the company’s routing algorithm to adapt and improve future routes.
In London users have contributed to the routes by sending 29,270 positive road ratings and 10,199 negative road ratings.
The Velo 2 features a new navigation interface, larger display screen and enhanced app-based route planner to give new and experienced riders confidence in following a safe route.
Beeline is currently integrated with shared micromobility operator TIER, with navigation in the TIER app being provided by Beeline. This is an exploratory step at the moment as e-scooters and bikes typically have the same infrastructure needs.
Mark Jenner, Beeline’s Co-Founder, told Zag Daily: “The way we move around is changing, and this is a fascinating time for everyone working in cycling and urban mobility.
“As we launch the Beeline Velo 2, we are thrilled to have reached the milestone of a million rides being ridden using our technology.
“Our technology exists to enable more people to enjoy riding on two wheels. We know that concerns around safety are often a barrier to uptake of cycling, so by allowing riders to rate and provide feedback on routes – we are helping to create a better cycling experience.”
Beeline is planning on continuing to improve the quality and specificity of the data it collects from riders to make better route suggestions.
