Shared micromobility operator Bolt is launching 16,000 new e-bikes across more than 30 European cities.
The e-bikes will be deployed over the next six months.
Bolt’s VP of Rentals Dmitri Pivovarov explained to Zag Daily that the firm’s mission is to offer people and cities as many alternatives to private cars as possible.
“We believe that diversifying our micromobility fleet to include e-bikes will contribute to achieving that mission,” he said.
“E-bikes gives us the opportunity to better cover different use case scenarios. This means that we are trying to offer the best micromobility solution for the purpose of urban mobility intended by the user. In our vision, scooters are the best option for a trip of up to 4 kilometres and e-bikes for longer distances ranging from 5 to 10 kilometres.”
So far this year Bolt has launched e-bikes in Madrid, Stockholm, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Oslo and Krakow, and now operates scooter and e-bike fleets in 200 cities, up from 170 cities at the start of 2022.
The announcement comes after the company said it will spend over €150 million in 2022 to further scale its scooter and e-bike operations as well as develop solutions to enhance user experience and safety.
Bolt e-bikes come with safety features including rear and front wheel drum brakes to help control the speed, and “puncture-proof” pneumatic tyres that provide better grip and durability.
They also have a dashboard providing riders with information about speed, battery level and speed zones.
The newest e-bike model can last for up to five years and is produced from 100% recyclable aluminium, according to the firm. A high capacity battery offers a range of up to 90 km on a single charge.
Pivovarov added: “Micromobility creates a positive impact on people and cities. Riders can beat the traffic and move around quickly and efficiently. Cities benefit from better air quality and less congestion. That is why “we see scooters and e-bikes as the future of mobility in cities.”
