Beryl has today been awarded one of the most prestigious businesses accolades in the country – a King’s Award for Enterprise

It is the first shared sustainable transport operator to receive such an award and recognises achievements from UK businesses in the realms of innovation, international trade, sustainable development, and promoting opportunity through social mobility.

The award comes five years after Beryl launched its first transport scheme and the company has now partnered with more than 20 local and regional transport authorities to generate millions of sustainable journeys.

“The top line successes of our schemes are well documented in terms of ridership, miles clocked up and even tonnes of carbon saved, but there’s so much unseen work that goes on,” Beryl CEO Phil Ellis told Zag Daily.

“We try to maximise our positive impact in the towns and cities that we serve, running partnerships with local charities, not-for-profit organisations and community groups. We provide free use of our vehicles to reward volunteers, enable sustainability projects, promote physical and mental wellbeing and support people experiencing transport barriers and/or poverty.”

Beryl also offers job coaching and experience to young people aged 19 to 25 with additional learning needs, and upskills existing staff by providing access to both on-the-job and external training opportunities.

“From a business perspective, it’s important that we operate as a carbon neutral organisation, first reducing and as a last resort offsetting our carbon emissions through projects and initiatives.”

Over the last two years Beryl has achieved the internationally recognised ISO 14001 environmental management standard, its near term sustainability goals were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, and it was also re-certified as a B-Corp registered company for a further three years.

“We believe that our sustainable interventions are exemplary and help us to stand out in a fast paced and competitive industry.”
