Liverpool Airport has launched its first ever parking zone for shared bikes and scooters.
The UK city’s John Lennon airport has opened up parking for approximately 10 shared micromobility vehicles supplied by Bolt, with the organisation stating capacity can be expanded based on demand.
Bolt runs a fleet of 2,000 e-scooters and 100 e-bikes in Liverpool, with the north-western city marking the operator’s UK e-scooter debut after taking over from rival Voi earlier this year.
Whilst the parking zone is available for use by any shared micromobility rider, it’s the airport’s staff that are anticipated to make greatest use of it, with the bays situated close to the main employee entrance.
“We believe these will be more popular with staff based at the airport – particularly those who live locally and who don’t have access to a car but need to travel to and from the airport for their shift patterns outside of public transport operating hours,” Robin Tudor, Head of PR and Communications and head of surface access at Liverpool John Lennon airport, told Zag Daily.
“Passengers are naturally welcome to use the facility too. However, with most passengers needing to take luggage away with them, this might only be suitable for those travelling with little or no baggage.”
Liverpool John Lennon airport is located in the Speke suburb, approximately eight miles from Liverpool’s city centre. Bolt’s launch earlier this year marked the first time that outer neighbourhoods like Speke got access to the city’s e-scooter rental scheme.
Bolt’s fleet in Liverpool is available 24/7 and includes the operator’s solar-assisted shared e-bike model, a distance-based pricing option, AI-powered parking validation and pre-ride tests to prevent drunk riding.
“This is the first time the airport has been able to offer this parking facility and follows the introduction of access to Bolt’s scooters and bikes across the whole of the city boundary,” Tudor said.
The parking facility, Tudor added, gives a “further transport option” to staff who have to travel to the airport for early-morning and late-night shifts. The earliest flights at the airport typically depart at around 6am, with staff having to be on-site well before.
